Careem shutting down in Pakistan marks a major shift in the local ride-hailing industry. The company announced it will discontinue its ride-hailing service in Pakistan on July 18, ending nearly a decade of operations in the country.
This decision was shared by Careem’s CEO and co-founder, Mudassir Sheikha, who said it was made with a heavy heart due to economic challenges, increased competition, and a difficult global investment climate.
Despite Careem exiting ride-hailing in Pakistan, the company is not leaving entirely. It will continue operating under Careem Technologies, with a focus on its Everything App, offering food delivery, grocery delivery, digital wallet services, and other convenience features. This shift indicates a broader pivot rather than a complete departure.
Careem praised its team in Pakistan for creating millions of job opportunities, promoting digital payment adoption, and driving tech innovation over the past ten years. While Careem ride services will stop, customer support via Careem Care will remain available until September 18, and users will receive detailed instructions on how to handle existing Careem wallet balances.
Although Careem is shutting down ride services, Pakistan remains a vital part of its business. The company emphasized it will continue investing in Pakistani tech talent and expanding its digital service ecosystem in the region.
