The government of Pakistan has partially restored access to the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, after more than a year of restrictions. Users across major cities have reported being able to use the platform without VPNs, marking the first significant easing of the ban since February 2024.
The platform had been blocked during the general elections last year, drawing widespread criticism from journalists, human rights activists, and international observers, who condemned the move as an attack on free speech and digital rights.
Despite a court order earlier this year directing authorities to restore access, the platform remained largely inaccessible—until now. No official statement has been issued by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) regarding the recent development.
It remains unclear whether the restoration is temporary or part of a broader policy shift. However, the partial unblocking of X has been welcomed by the public, with many calling for complete and permanent restoration of all digital platforms to ensure freedom of expression and access to information.
