Apple has quietly rolled out iOS 18.3, its latest iPhone update, introducing an unexpected new feature: compatibility with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network. This update allows select iPhones to connect to Starlink’s satellite network, offering an alternative to Apple’s existing satellite service.
In collaboration with SpaceX and T-Mobile US, Apple has integrated this feature, which is currently available to a limited group of users. iPhones on T-Mobile can now stay connected via satellite for texting when out of cellular range. Previously, T-Mobile provided a similar satellite messaging service for Samsung devices only, while Apple used the Globalstar network for its Emergency SOS feature.
The feature is part of a beta program for T-Mobile users, with a new toggle option in cellular data settings to manage satellite connectivity. The service works automatically, connecting to the Starlink satellite when there is no cellular coverage. Right now, the service is limited to text messaging, but T-Mobile and SpaceX plan to expand it to include data and voice calls in the future.
Currently, this service is only available to U.S. users with iPhone 14 and newer models, with T-Mobile planning to expand the beta program in February. The key advantage of this integration is that, unlike Apple’s Globalstar service, which requires users to point their phones at the sky, Starlink’s service works seamlessly from users’ pockets.
Elon Musk has hinted that future iterations of the Starlink service could support medium-resolution video, with the next-generation Starlink constellation bringing even more capabilities. This update marks a significant step towards expanding satellite communication options for iPhone users, especially in areas with limited or no cellular coverage.
