Mira Murati, former CTO of OpenAI, has launched an AI startup, Thinking Machines Lab, alongside a team of 30 researchers from various companies. The startup aims to improve AI adaptability, develop more capable systems, and promote open science to advance the AI field.
John Schulman, OpenAI co-founder and former researcher, has joined as the startup’s chief scientist. Schulman previously left OpenAI for Anthropic in August, citing his focus on AI alignment. Sources, speaking anonymously to Reuters, suggest that more former OpenAI employees are likely to join Thinking Machines Lab.
Announcing the launch on X, Murati shared that she co-founded the company with a team of scientists, engineers, and AI experts. She emphasized three key goals: helping people tailor AI systems to their needs, building strong foundations for more advanced AI, and fostering open science to drive industry-wide improvements.
“Our goal is simple,” Murati stated, “to advance AI by making it broadly useful and understandable through solid foundations, open science, and practical applications.”
