Tesla Robotaxis Might Hit Austin Streets by June 22, Elon Musk Reveals
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced a tentative launch of the company’s robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, on June 22. The first driverless ride, from Tesla’s factory to a customer’s home, is planned for June 28—Musk’s birthday. He shared a video showing a driverless Tesla Model Y navigating Austin streets with a “Robotaxi” logo.
The pilot will include just 10–20 vehicles using a new version of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software and will operate only in geofenced areas of Austin. Tesla employees will monitor the cars remotely. The Model Y is being used for now, ahead of Tesla’s dedicated robotaxi vehicle, the CyberCab, due next year.
Safety concerns remain. Protesters—including The Dawn Project, Tesla Takedown, and Resist Austin—plan to rally on June 12, citing risks with Tesla’s Autopilot and FSD. Dan O’Dowd of The Dawn Project, whose firm works with Tesla rivals like Ford and Toyota, leads the effort.
Musk, who also heads SpaceX, xAI, and X (formerly Twitter), recently served as head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, easing regulations on his companies. He has donated nearly $300 million to support Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign.
