Gukesh Dommaraju, at 18, made history by becoming the youngest-ever undisputed classical chess world champion, defeating China’s Ding Liren in their 14-game final in Singapore on December 12. The match, tied heading into the last game, saw Ding blunder on move 55, allowing Gukesh to clinch the victory with a 7½-6½ score. The emotional moment was marked by Gukesh’s tears and a heartfelt celebration with his father, while Ding, the defending champion, was left in disbelief.

Gukesh’s victory makes him India’s second world chess champion after Viswanathan Anand. Reflecting on his journey, Gukesh expressed gratitude, acknowledging the decade-long dream of becoming world champion. His triumph not only elevates his personal career but also solidifies India’s standing as a chess powerhouse, receiving widespread praise, including from the President of India.
