Qwen 2.5 by Alibaba: The Next Big Rival to DeepSeek?
The generative AI competition has intensified with Alibaba launching Qwen 2.5, directly challenging DeepSeek’s V3 model. DeepSeek-V3 gained attention for its efficiency, trained on older Nvidia H800 GPUs for under $6 million, significantly less than other AI models. Its rapid success led to Meta investigating its development, while its R1 AI assistant quickly topped Apple’s app charts, signaling a major shift in the AI landscape.
DeepSeek’s rise has impacted global tech, triggering a $600 billion Nvidia stock sell-off as investors questioned the need for high-end GPUs. In response, ByteDance and Alibaba accelerated their AI efforts, with Alibaba claiming Qwen 2.5 outperforms DeepSeek. However, concerns around data security, privacy, and potential IP issues, including whether DeepSeek leveraged existing AI models, continue to be debated among industry experts.
While DeepSeek has received praise, including from OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5 is yet to earn the same recognition. Former U.S. President Donald Trump called it a wake-up call for American AI firms to innovate at lower costs. As China’s AI sector gains ground, its rapid advancements are forcing global competitors to rethink their strategies and future investments.
