Taobao, DHgate Top US Charts — Luxury Looks, No Brand Prices
Chinese shopping apps DHgate and Taobao have surged to the top of the U.S. App Store rankings, with DHgate now at No. 2 and Taobao reaching No. 5. This sudden rise follows a wave of viral TikTok videos explaining how many luxury goods — including handbags, shoes, and clothing — are manufactured in China before being branded and sold at marked-up prices overseas.
These videos have led many U.S. consumers to explore direct-from-manufacturer platforms like DHgate and Taobao as cheaper alternatives to premium brands. With growing dissatisfaction over rising prices on platforms like Shein and Temu, users are turning to these lesser-known apps to shop luxury-style products without paying brand premiums.
Taobao, in particular, saw explosive growth — climbing from No. 461 to No. 5 in just a few days, according to data from Appfigures. The app’s U.S. downloads spiked 514% in April compared to the previous month, outperforming major retailers like Amazon and Walmart on the App Store.
While buying directly from manufacturers doesn’t eliminate tariffs, many consumers believe it helps reduce overall costs. However, shoppers are advised to proceed cautiously, as quality can vary widely. Reading reviews and checking buyer-uploaded photos is highly recommended before making a purchase.
