Careem to Shut Down Rides in Pakistan from Next Month
Careem has announced that it will stop its ride-hailing service in Pakistan on July 18, after nearly 10 years of operations. The decision was shared by Careem’s CEO and co-founder, Mudassir Sheikha, who said it was made with a heavy heart due to tough economic conditions, rising competition, and global investment challenges.
Despite shutting down rides, Sheikha emphasized that Careem’s journey in Pakistan isn’t over. The company will continue working in a different role, focusing on its “Everything App” — which includes services like food and grocery delivery, digital payments, and more. This new phase will be led by Careem Technologies, with a growing team based in Pakistan.
Careem praised its local team for creating millions of jobs and helping bring digital payments, trust, and tech innovation to the country. The company also noted that it will keep supporting users through Careem Care until September 18 and will provide instructions for those with wallet balances.
Pakistan has played a major role in Careem’s story, and the company says it will continue to invest in talent and technology from the country moving forward.
