Tesla’s redesigned Model Y to compete with growing EV rivals in China
Tesla has unveiled the redesigned Model Y, aimed at the Chinese and Asia-Pacific markets, marking the first major update since its 2020 launch. Codenamed Juniper, the new version will begin deliveries in March 2025 with two trims: Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range All-Wheel Drive (LR AWD), starting just under $36,000. The design features more angular elements inspired by the Cybertruck, including a sharper front end, continuous light bars, and a streamlined rear with a “cross-car lamp” taillight.
Inside, the Model Y introduces several upgrades, such as an ambient light bar, powered rear seats, and a new touchscreen for rear passengers. Tesla claims the updated suspension improves ride comfort, while reduced road noise and a slight weight reduction contribute to better efficiency. Though the range and efficiency improvements are modest, the new design is expected to compete with China’s growing EV market.
Tesla has now refreshed all four of its core EV models, positioning itself against local competitors in China. While the Model Y’s update is initially focused on the Asian market, Tesla has hinted at future releases and lower-cost models, though CEO Elon Musk has abandoned earlier plans for a $25,000 car. The new Model Y aims to strengthen Tesla’s position in the global EV market.
