WhatsApp Set to Introduce More Ads Within Messaging App
WhatsApp is introducing three new advertising features globally, aiming to help businesses reach users more effectively. The new ads will not appear inside private chats, and message contents will remain encrypted. Instead, ads will be shown in the Updates tab—separate from the chat screen—using basic information like your location, language, ad interactions, and followed channels. Users who link WhatsApp with Facebook or Instagram will see more personalized ads.
Businesses will now be able to promote their channels in the Updates section and charge subscriptions for extra content. WhatsApp plans to take a 10% cut from these earnings, with additional app store fees depending on the business size. Companies can also advertise using WhatsApp Status updates (similar to Instagram Stories), which can lead users to start a chat by tapping the ad.
Experts believe Meta is slowly turning WhatsApp into a monetizable platform, similar to Facebook and Instagram. However, this change may not sit well with users in regions like the UK and Europe, where people prefer WhatsApp strictly for messaging. WhatsApp says regular messaging won’t be affected, and ads won’t appear in private chats. Still, the company is facing criticism for introducing permanent features like the AI button, which cannot be removed.
